We use an awful lot of baby wipes in our house and being part of an environmentally conscious family I have decided to make our own. I would have made washable wipes if there had been any suitable spare material in my stash, however as there isn’t I will be using the everyday items I do have to hand.  I will be recycling a Bold 2 in 1 washing tablet container, however you can use any suitable container you have around the house.

Materials required:

Paper Towels: these must be the Plenty brand previously known as Bounty
Baby Wash or Baby bath Lotion
Cutting board
Serrated knife
Saucepan
Measuring cup
Table measuring spoon
Plastic tub with sealable lid

Place the paper towel roll on the cutting board and carefully cut it in half

Measure two cups of water and two tablespoons of baby wash into a saucepan; bring this solution to the boil

After a few seconds the cardboard in the middle will soften and you can pull it out

It’s 20th December and we are finally ready for Christmas, as you can see we’ve decorated the Christmas tree. I know you shouldn’t put your Christmas stockings out before Christmas Eve but we just could not resist putting them up at the side of the fireplace. We are hoping Santa can find something hand made to put into our stockings, as we love hand made gifts because you just know that a lot of love and attention has gone into making the gift. I don’t have anything against store bought gifts; it is just more personal to receive something that has been hand made especially for you.

Even our Miniature Pinscher Holly wanted to join in with the festive decorating, although she wasn’t too sure what to make of the dancing dog dressed as Santa.

Nicholas Coke is a one-year-old living miracle; He was born without a brain, he is unable to see, hear or even crawl yet despite everything he has managed to make history.  Nicholas suffers from Anencephaly, which is a congenital disorder that results from a neural tube defect that occurs when the head end of the neural tube fails to close, usually between the 23rd and 26th day of pregnancy, resulting in the absence of a major portion of the brain, skull and scalp.

Anencephaly occurs in approximately 1 out of 10,000 births, although the exact number is not known because many of these pregnancies result in a miscarriage, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

The cause of anencephaly is as of yet unknown, many in the medical profession believe it is probably triggered by a combination of genetic and environmental.

We do know however that taking Folic Acid can help prevent anencephaly.

Why doesn’t your neonatal intensive care unit baby clothing have feet in them?

A good question and the reason is because babies may require a number of tests or procedures during their time on the unit, for example the taking of blood.

Premature babies often have their blood-checked for infections, blood sugar levels, anaemia and jaundice etc.  Blood is taken from a heel prick or from an arterial line.

If the babies clothing had feet in then the nurse would have to remove the garment, however with our sleepsuits only the socks or booties need to be removed, thus making the whole procedure quick and less intrusive.

Why does your NICU clothing fasten down the front?

All babies require a certain amount of liquids as well as sugar and salt through out the day and if these requirements are not being met then the baby may require a tube inserted into their stomach or an intravenous drip via a vein usually located on the back of the hand or foot.
